Statement of Purpose – SOP For Biotechnology

Doctorial study is a significant milestone in the perpetual journey to education and the best exposure to this would be an eligible platform to prove the skills and knowledge that I have learnt. With due reverence to the department and the university, I pen down a “statement of purpose”. This statement is an attempt to project my credentials as an aspiring researcher, my achievements as a biotechnology/biology graduate, my interest in this doctoral program and my ambitions.

I am currently pursuing third semester of my Masters in biology at Western Illinois University under Dr. Richard Musser’s Lab. I have done my undergraduate from Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology (SNIST) affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, an institution aided with World Bank assistance under TEQIP scheme. Having good teaching and laboratory facilities, my undergraduate college has laid primary emphasis to fundamentals both theoretical and practical on a wide range of subjects, which gave me a thorough understanding of essential features of the subjects and substantial motivations for research.

I have worked on a two month project in the college related to Plant tissue i.e. “Callus induction, shoot regeneration and root initiation in Andrographis Paniculata and Cassia Angustifolia” (Medicinal plants), the work is in progress for identifying secondary metabolites in them, I had a good experience in learning the concepts of plant tissue culture and the patience required for doing a research. I have undergone a 10 day training program in Andhra Pradesh Foods (A government of Andhra Pradesh enterprise) An ISO 9001:2000 Certified Company where in qualitative and quantitative analysis of food samples are done.

As a part of my undergraduate final semester thesis, I worked on Standardization of arginase enzyme and the role in various COPD’s. Under this study I worked on standardizing arginase enzyme and comparing the amount of arginase present in normal to that of diseased patients. I observed the concentration of arginase in normal individual is negligible to that of an asthma patient. So there may be some kind of an effect by Arginase on pulmonary respiratory diseases .After this study I could realize that arginase does worsen the pathogenic conditions. The work is still under progress. I am expecting publication probably in 2-3 months.

My Masters’ research focuses on gene expression levels of caterpillar and their defense mechanism when fed on soybean plants. The work is in progress to study various defense gene expressions by running micro array analysis and qRT pcr analysis. I have been a Research Assistant for a year and presently working as a teacher assistant and teach microbiology laboratory for undergraduate students.

Apart from technical skills, I have always been an active student and organizer and I have been a member in conducting various National level technical symposiums in the institution. I am one of the chief Executive members of NIDHI-QUIZ CLUB (SNIST), a student organized club, which initiates programs related to aptitude and other competitive examinations. As an active member of Technical Association of Biotechnology (TAB, SNIST), we organize guest lectures by eminent scientists.
